About the Study

The Full Story

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to determine if verbs, such as ride, can be paired with sounds (e.g., the “clip clop” of a horses hooves) to assist with verb naming.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Therefore, your child will see 18 movies (about 7 seconds each) depicting verbs paired with sounds and 18 movies without sounds.

WHAT DATA ARE YOU COLLECTING?

We will determine how accurate your child was at naming the 18 verbs. Your child’s response time will also be measured. This will allow us to determine if sound leads to a quicker response.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD DO?

Day 1 = 60 minutes of language and behavior testing

Day 2 = 25 minute task using the 18 movies with sound

Day 3 = 25 minute task using the 18 movies without sound

ARE THERE RISKS?

First, your child may become fatigued and distressed in the new environment or because of the school-like naming task.

Second, your confidentiality will be maintained to the extent allowed by law, but your confidentiality may be compromised if data are stolen. We will protect your data in locked offices, locked cabinets, and password protected computers.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

The testing results will indicate how your child’s communication, daily living, socialization, motor skills, and behavior compares to his/her same age peers. Beyond that there are no direct benefits to your child.

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THE DATA?

The data collected will be stored indefinitely, and de-identified data will be used for publication and presentation purposes for this study and future studies. Only researchers involved in Dr. Brock’s lab, current and future, will see the de-identified data. Keeping these data will allow us directly compare this study with future studies. If you participate or do not participate, please know that we have a speech and language clinic at ISU for your child to attend for free.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO COVID

You may ask me any questions that you have. Your child does not have to participate if you do not want to or if your child chooses not to do so. You may also stop at any time for any reason and not lose any rights that you already have. You may elect for this study to take place through Zoom video conferencing secondary to COVID-19. You will need access to WiFi, a computer and a smartphone. The smartphone is for you to record the sessions and subsequently upload those videos to Box, a secure server that only the researcher and his research assistants will have access to. The researcher will also be recording the Zoom sessions. This is necessary to ensure that the data collected is accurate for analysis purposes.
