About the Study
The Full Story
PURPOSE
The investigators are inviting your child to take part in a research study. The purpose of this study is to see if children identify animated symbols faster and more accurately than static pictures.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
Your child will be assigned to a one of four conditions involving symbol set (Picture Communication Symbols or Autism Language Program symbols) and symbol format (animated or static). They will point to pictures on a computer when asked.
WHAT DATA ARE YOU COLLECTING?
Response times and identification accuracy of animated and static pictures
WHAT WILL MY CHILD DO?
Day 1 (30 minutes): your child will take a standardized receptive vocabulary test to confirm age appropriate skill level. Next they will be asked to name 21 different verbs such as lift and jump.
Day 2 (< 25 minutes): Your child will work on a computer with a research assistant. They will be asked to identify specific verb picture or animation on a computer. These tasks are representative of a typical educational activity performed at school.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFO COVID
You may ask me any questions that you have. Your child does not have to participate if you do not want to or if your child chooses not to do so. You may also stop at any time for any reason and not lose any rights that you already have. You may elect for this study to take place through Zoom video conferencing secondary to COVID-19. You will need access to WiFi, a computer and a smartphone. The smartphone is for you to record the sessions and subsequently upload those videos to Box, a secure server that only the researcher and his research assistants will have access to. The researcher will also be recording the Zoom sessions. This is necessary to ensure that the data collected is accurate for analysis purposes.
