The Effects of Animation on the Identification and Interpretation of Graphic Symbol Sentences
Recruiting 4- to 5-year-old children and 7- to -8year old children with typical development. We are also looking for 6- to 12-year old children with developmental disabilities

The Full Story
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to determine if verbs, such as ride, and prepositions, such as in, can be animated to assist with comprehension of sentences made of graphic symbols.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
Your child will see 21 symbol sentences in an animated reading and identification and static reading and identification condition. In the reading task, your child will be asked to read a graphic symbol sentence out loud. In the identification task, four pictures will be presented with each sentence for your child to choose from.
WHAT DATA ARE YOU COLLECTING?
Reading accuracy, response time, and identification accuracy will be measured.
WHAT WILL MY CHILD DO?
Day 1 = 60 minutes of screening tasks
Day 2 = 40-minute task reading and identifying the 21 sentences with animated symbols
Day 3 = 40-minute task reading and identifying the 21 sentences with static symbols.

We are asking your permission for your child to take part in a research study. Your child does not have to participate if you do not want them to. You or your child can refuse to participate at any time, even after starting the study.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO COVID
You may ask me any questions that you have. Your child does not have to participate if you do not want to or if your child chooses not to do so. You may also stop at any time for any reason and not lose any rights that you already have. You may elect for this study to take place through Zoom video conferencing secondary to COVID-19. You will need access to WiFi, a computer and a smartphone. The smartphone is for you to record the sessions and subsequently upload those videos to Box, a secure server that only the researcher and his research assistants will have access to. The researcher will also be recording the Zoom sessions. This is necessary to ensure that the data collected is accurate for analysis purposes.
